“Relation—Blackboard Classroom” by Kawaguchi Tatsuo presented at Matsudai Nohbutai has been long well-received since its inauguration in 2003. In addition to the restoration of damages caused over the long duration of installation, the artist created new artworks “Relation – Education” and “Blackboard Materials” that are built-in in the desks.

Series of artworks for “Relation – Education” built-in in the desks

The top of the desks turned into blackboard flips open. Art boxes composed of teaching materials that are gathered from closed schools across Echigo-Tsumari are installed in the space under the flip-up top where computers used to be installed. Each of the art boxes has its own theme in accordance with different teaching materials for various subjects such as music and science.

Series of artworks for “Blackboard Materials"

The old glass shelf standing next to the blackboard hosts another series of new artworks called “Blackboard Materials.”

From something still familiar such as a microscope to tambourine to something no longer in use such as mimeograph files, things that belong to a school are painted in the colour of the blackboard.

Kawaguchi Tatsuo

Born in Hyogo in 1940. After graduating from Tama Art University, Department of Painting in 1962, he stayed in Europe and America from 1975 to 1976 as a young artist supported by a government grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
