Echigo-Tsumari this year: introducing new artworks and how to access to hub facilities

While Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2021 has been postponed, we are pleased to present “Echigo-Tsumari this year” from 22 July to 31 October 2021. Here we will introduce new artworks as we re-open two hub facilities, Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (“MonET”, formerly known as Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE) and Matsudai Nohbutai & Matsudai Castle.


Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET)

Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, KINARE has changed its name to Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET) and established itself as a hub of Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. MonET had welcomed new permanent artworks who are acclaimed contemporary artists including NAWA Kohei, NAKATANI Michiko, me and more.

※Opening dates and hours for Nicolas Darrot’s work will be updated in due course.

・Approximately 10 min walk from Tokamachi station on JR Iiyama line and Hokuhoku Line.
※ Electric bicycles are available for hire at Tokamachi-city Tourist Information Centre (west exit of Tokamachi station)Renta. Price for hire JPY1500 per day (incl. tax)

Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum

The entire Matsudai Nohbutai and artworks dotted around Joyama area are reopened as field museum. In addition to a dynamic artwork comprising from bicycles by AZUMA Koichiro, four pieces of newly created artworks by Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, one of the most prominent artists representing ETAT, complete “Kabakovs’ Dream” with two of their existing artworks, “The Rice Field” (2000) and “The Arch of Life” (2015). There is no other place in the world where you can see so many of their works being presented closely one another. Two more new artworks will be created in Joyama behind Matsudai Nohbutai in autumn to complete “Kabakovs’ Dream” which consist of nine works in total including another new work at MonET.

Matsudai Castle (Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum)

Three newly created artworks will be presented at Matsudai Castle standing tall as an outlook on top of Joyama. The contrast between its castle-like appearance from outside and comtemporary art installed inside is stanning. Visitors can explore Matsudai Nohbuta and artworks dotted around Joyama as a field museum.
※Artworks at Mastudai Castle only open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays

【Access】
・A free shuttle bus from Matsudai Nohbutai to Matsudai Castle (one-way only) will be available on Saturdays, Sundays and public holiday.
・Bicycle hire JPY300 for two hours
※ The free shuttle bus and bicycle hire are exclusive to those who have purchased “field museum ticket” or “admission to Matsudai Castle” at Matsudai Nohbutai.
