Nestled in the secluded Akiyamago region, “Katakuri House” is a former elementary school that watched over local children from 1884 to 1992. Our highly popular meals feature creative menus crafted from seasonal mountain ingredients gathered locally throughout the year.Furthermore, the former classrooms have been transformed into relaxing Japanese-style rooms, while the principal’s office has been converted into a bath fed by natural hot spring water. Guests can play “Tsumari Sugoroku,” a board game created by Hara Rintaro + Hara Yu, in the gymnasium, or enjoy trekking through the great outdoors to see the spectacular “Ketto Stone-walled Rice Fields” and the “Mikura Bridge,” famous as a film location.

“The Shedding House”—a home transformed entirely into an artwork, with floors, walls, ceilings, and beams carved away throughout the interior. Years of living with a traditional hearth and cooking stove have left the interior of this old folk house coated in black soot.Facing this 150-year-old traditional farmhouse, artist Kurakake Junichi and a group of students from the Sculpture Course at Nihon University’s College of Art employed the technique of carving the entire house with chisels to reveal a new facet of the structure and transform it into an artwork. The space, completed after approximately two and a half years of production and a total of 3,000 man-hours of labor, envelops viewers with overwhelming power.Whether with friends, family, or a group, spend a night in the village at this farmstay, where you can rent out the entire house.

The roof slides open to reveal the sky, allowing you to gaze at the sky’s hues as they gradually shift after sunset. The square window frames a sky that transitions from pale blue to ultramarine and finally to pitch black, letting you truly appreciate the subtle changes in light that we often overlook in our daily lives. Optical fibers are woven throughout the space—in the Bath, the tokonoma, and the bedroom—so that when you soak in the bath, your body is enveloped in a magical glow. We invite you to enjoy this truly special experience.
