Come to Echigo-Tsumari Art Field during GW with your family and friends to enjoy the spring programme which includes newly created artwork in Kiyotsukyo Tunnel, artworks outdoor and special exhibitions.


Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art

Museum of Picture Book Art opens from 24 April 2021 for this year with a special spring exhibition “A fish seen by a boy and a girl seen by a fish”. Shizuka, the goat, will return to the museum with her newly born kids in mid May.

Opening duration of the museum in 2021: Saturday 24 April – Tuesday 23 November


"Tunnel of Light" (at Kiyotsukyo Tunnel)

A newly created artwork at the second observation deck inside the Kiyotsukyo Tunnel opens from Thursday 29 April 2021.

"The Last Class" by Christina Boltanski and Jean Kalman

“The Last Class”, a large-scale installation in the closed school by Christian Boltanski and Jean Kalman is open to the public during weekends and public holidays. The sound of heart beat resonates in the once-school space which was given a new life whereas at the space upstairs close to the entrance, “unique friends” dance to remind viewers of the world after death.

Opening dates in 2021: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 29 April – 31 October


Gallery Yuyama

Gallery Yuyama opened in a renovated old minak house by two artists based in Niigata who have deep knowledge about snow. They have transformed one of the unoccupied houses called “Yuyama-no-ie” in region into a gallery where they present artworks and exhibitions highlighting the attractiveness and potential of snow.

Opening dates in spring 2021: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 29 April – 27 June


Join an official guided tour to enjoy sansai (mountain vegetables)

The buffet lunch at Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo is available for the official tour participants as well as those who visit here on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Experienced tour guide takes participants to artworks across the region on the day bus tours which represents ETAT’s theme, “humans are part of nature”. Participants will walk around in satoyama to search for sansai (mountain vegetables) without worrying about social distancing in nature. (※ Please come in confortable shoes and outfits as the tour involves walking in nature). Lunch filled with local ingridients are included.

Katakuri House

Katakuri House is open to take booking for this season. Immerse yourself in the dynamic nature as you enjoy local delicacies and flavours and onsen to feel refreshed.


Ubusuna House

Ubusuna House is an artwork and a restaurant where you can enjoy spring special set meal, “Sansai Teishoku” filled with fresh mountain vegetables (JPY1500).

Opening hours:10:00~15:00 (lunch 11:00 – LO 14:00)
※ Due to the State of Emergency declared for Tokyo and other prefectures, Ubusuna House will not be open during the GW and instead open from Saturday 15 May 2021. 


"16 Ropes" by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov at Matsudai History Museum

From the iconic artwork of ETAT “The Rice Field” (2000) to “The Arch of Life” (2015), Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have been supporting ETAT for over 20 years. They have entrusted their dream to the community which will come to fruition called “Kabakovs’ Dream” in the summer of 2021.

This is a special installation called “16 Ropes”, prior to the opening of the collections of works by the Kabakovs, is presented in a special arrangement. Let’s sneak peek before it will be eventually moved to KINARE.

※ Matsudai Nohbutai, adjecent to Matsudai History Museum is closed for refurbishment while Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo remains open to the public.

Kyororo

A special spring exhibition “The Picking-up Insects” is currently on at Kyororo. The exhibition introduces how to find and pick up sixteen insects, enjoy “insect hunting” and build hunting techniques.
