【Vol.8】The 8th of the eleven series of memorial tours will be run on Fri 16 Sep tracing the footsteps of Furugori Hiroshi (1947-2021). The artist participated ETATs in 2000, 2003, 2006, and 2018. The tour visits his work "The placenta - Misyaguchi" and other works in hub facilities as well as joins a memorial led by Kitagawa Fram, General Director of ETAT. Participants enjoy satoyama delicacies during lunch at Ubusuna House and sweets at Salon Monet during the memorial. This guided tour provides an opportunity to spend closely with a featured artist - a perfect introduction for first-time visitors as well as solo participants.

13:10 The entire tunnel is an artwork
"Tunnel of Light" by Ma Yansong / MAD Architects
The tour begins with the visit to Kiyotsukyo Tunnel, which has been constantly popular since its opening with the work by Ma Yansong / MAD Architects. Formed by the 16 million years of the earth's history, Kiyotsukyo is one of the best three gorges in Japan. The 750m long tunnel with integrated artworks offers magnificent scenes of nature in four seasons.

"For Lots of Lost Windows" by Utsumi Akiko
The artwork helps viewers rediscover and re-appreciate the landscape of Echigo-Tsumari by looking at the landscape in the frame.

12:00 A large scale installation occupying the entire closed school
"The Last Class" by Christian Boltanski and Jean Kalman
The artwork enclosed the memories of the closed primary school which stands in the region covered with a thick blanket of snow for more than half of the year. Visitors will be immersed in the world of the artwork created by contemporary artist and light artist.

Boltanski is one of the artists who presented works in several ETATs whom we will memorialise and remember.

13:15 A pottery gallery and restaurant under the thatched roof
Ubusuna House
The 100-year-old thatched roof house welcomes visitors to a gallery for potteries as well as a restaurant serving food with locally-grown ingredients cooked by villagers. A newly introduced menu in 2022, slow-cooked Tsumari Pork and fried Kurumafu, was developed in consultation with Matsuura Chef who runs "manoma" in Tsuruoka.

The Niigata-based Origami artist expressed respect for the spirit of Ubusuna House by folding white papers.

14:10 A grand work attempted to "give a shape to a subtle presence of the place"
"The placenta - Misyaguchi" by Furugori Hiroshi
The artist's work for ETAT2006 has been treasured by local people. As the title of the work "placenta" represents, the space of the work provides a secret and calm atmosphere as if you are protected by something as if a fetus is protected by the placenta.

14:55 A picture book story developed in the space of a closed school
"Museum of Picture Book Art" by Tashima Seizo
Tashima Seizo, a picture book artist has been expanding the museum in cooperation with local villagers. Immerse yourself into the space of the closed school filled with artworks made from natural materials such as driftwood and tree nuts. The resident goat Shizuka and her kids welcome you in the schoolyard outside.

16:10 Join us with a memorial service at the ETAT hub facility at the end of the tour
Museum on Echigo-Tsumari MonET
The museum re-opened with many new permanent collections in the summer of 2021. A series of special memorial exhibitions featuring ETAT participating artists who passed away in recent years are held during ETAT2022.

We will check the exhibition featuring Furugori Hiroshi and join the memorial service led by Kitagawa Fram, General Director of ETAT. (You can leave the tour if you wish to do so.)

"Winter Circlet" by Komatsu Kosei
The last work to see is installed in the void space at the entrance to Tokamachi station, representing sky, wind, light, and snow.
