Summary

In winter in Echigo-Tsumari, the entire satoyama is completely covered in snow. This year, too, there will be plenty of activities for both children and adults to enjoy, combining SNOW and ART.

Special Exhibition: "Echigo-Tsumari: Aspects of Snow I

The pond filled with water in the center of the MonET transforms into a field of pure white snow in winter. To reconsider the winter in Echigo-Tsumari, one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, and the appeal of snow, four artists will present contemporary art inside and outside the museum. Please come and see the transformation of the artworks along with the various faces of the snow. A playground where visitors can experience local culture will also be available.

Echigo-Tsumari: Aspects of Snow I
-Dates: Saturday, January 14, 2023 – Sunday, March 12, 2023 (closed on Tuesday and Wednesday)
-Hours: 10:00 – 16:00 (last entry 30 minutes before)
-Admission: Adult 1,200 yen / Children under 15 age  600 yen (including the permanent exhibition)

Event: Winter Playground : “Hanekkeshi” in Shinzui village

Let’s experience an old game handed down in the village. “Hanekkeshi” is Shinzui village is that people play shuttlecock with “kosuki,” an old snow removal tool.

Shinsui’s Hanekkeshi masters will teach you how to play the game. Local mothers will entertain you with food.

Night Museum
With the Tokamachi Snow Festival, the museum will be open at night for one day only.

[Admission] ¥1,200 for adults, ¥600 for elementary and junior high school students (re-entry on the same day is permitted)
*It is not possible to experience the work “Steps” and “Shinsui no Hanekeshi” after 17:00.


Matsudai "NOHBUTAi" Field Museum

Special Exhibition: "Satoyama Snow Amusement Park -An amusement park appears for a moment in a field of white snow⁉

Set in a satoyama in winter, there will be a natural slider using a natural incline, a snow-walking tool called “Kanjiki,” a rice cake baking experience using 100% Kogane-mochi, and colorful artwork that looks great on the snow. There will also be banana boats on the snow and daily mini-events.

Satoyama Snow Amusement Park -An amusement park will appear for a moment on the white snow field⁉
-Dates: Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 1/28 (Sat.) to 3/12 (Sun.), 2023
-Hours: 10:00 – 16:00
-Admission: Winter common ticket / induvial ticket (Adult 1000 yen, Children under 15 age 600yen)
-Participating artists: Kenichi Ohana Laboratory / Akita Public University of Fine Arts and Music, Ryo Shimura, and others

*Fees include admission to Matsudai Nohbutai, Matsudai History Museum, special exhibition (outdoors), and each viewing fee (Hand Holding Tower is not open to the public).
*Admission to the Nohbutai and Museum only is 600 yen for adults, 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
*Food and drink are not included.
*Re-entry on the same day is permitted.
*Banana boats and Kanjiki experience are for elementary school students and older.
*Banana boats can be used once per ticket. 2 banana boats or more can be used separately.


Events: Making old cloth elephant sandals, kanjiki walking, snow board class, snow soccer, etc.

Mini events such as making old cloth elephants, kanjiki walking, snowboarding, and snow soccer will be held during the exhibition period. Some of these events can be participated in with the common winter ticket, while others require a separate reservation.

Outdoor works to be seen in the snow

ou can also view some outdoor artworks in the snow. You can also search for artworks that are open to the public according to the date of your visit.

*The “open”, “closed”, and “open” status displayed in the upper left corner of each work’s image indicates the status of the work on the date of the search operation.
*Open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but outdoor works that can be viewed in winter are not enclosed or removed.


Echigo-Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science

A special exhibition, “The Beauty Forest Story,” is currently being held until March 12. Snowshoeing, a popular winter-only experience, is also available (snowshoe rental fee: 300 yen for museum visitors, 1,000 yen for rental only)!

Open: All year round (permanent exhibition + special exhibitions)
Closed: Tuesdays and Wednesdays (or the following weekday if the day falls on a national holiday) *Closed on Tuesdays until December
Hours: 9:00-16:00 (last admission 15:30) until 2/20, 9:00-17:00 (last admission 16:30) from 2/23
Fee : Adult 500 yen, free for children under 15 age (admission is not available with the winter common ticket. Privileges)
Privilege :Free snowshoe rental upon presentation of the winter common ticket (only for those who enter the museum)


House of Light

Fee :Junior high school students and older: 600 yen, elementary school students: 300 yen (not valid for admission with common winter ticket. (Not valid for admission with the winter common ticket, but discount offers are available)
Privilege: 100 yen discount for admission upon presentation of the winter common ticket.


Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel

Closed: Open daily (temporary closure depending on snowfall/entrance facilities are closed during winter)
Hours: 9:00-16:00 (last mine entry at 15:30) until 2/28, 8:30-17:00 (last mine entry at 16:30) from 3/1
Fee :General admission 1,000 yen, elementary and junior high school students 400 yen (not valid for admission with the winter common ticket. Discounts are available.)
Privilege: 100 yen discount for general admission and 50 yen discount for elementary and junior high school students upon presentation of the winter common ticket.

Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo

The annual cheese fondue is now on the Satoyama Buffet menu! Enjoy the rich cheese sauce mixed with winter vegetables. In addition, there is a full lineup of seasonal sweets. After lunch, please enjoy it with a cup of hot coffee or tea.

Yukimi Gozen & SNOWART Tour (Day Trip)

The “Yukimi-gozen” is a special program to enjoy winter dishes, which are served in lacquerware once used for weddings and funerals in the village, and are filled with local wisdom and culture, together with the hospitality of the village. Enjoy this year’s SNOWART and the pure white satoyama scenery as you sway slowly on the bus.

Dates: Every Saturday from 1/28 (Sat) to 3/11 (Sat)
Trip fee (tax included): ¥15,000 for adults, ¥14,000 for elementary and junior high school students, ¥5,000 for infants (3-5 years old) (including bus fare, lunch, common ticket, and guide fee)


4、Lodging


Katakuri House - Unexplored region of Akiyamago with heavy snowfall - Winter Limited Plan (1 night, 2 days)

Akiyamago, an unexplored region with such heavy snowfall that it was once exempted from compulsory education by the national government. We have prepared a two-times-only lodging plan to experience the winter in such Akiyamago, with a special viewing of a work at the former Okasawa Branch School, the southernmost and most difficult site in Echigo-Tsumari, which became the venue for the first work in 2022. On the following day, a local guide will take you to Mikurabashi Bridge, known as the setting for the movie “Yureru. Enjoy this special time to experience the unexplored region of heavy snowfall.

Dates: March 4 (Sat.) – 5 (Sun.), March 11 (Sat.) – 12 (Sun.)
Tour fee (tax included): General 27,500 yen, Elementary school students 16,500 yen, Ages 3 and up 11,000 yen (including the fee to see the Oakasawa artworks)


Sansho House

Sansho House is a facility of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale that is used by many people including the general public, participating artists, and the festival supporters and Kohebi-tai. Visitors can also view works by world-renowned artist Leandro Erlich.

Schedule: All year round (closed from 12/27 to 1/4 for New Year holidays)
Fee: Adults 6,750 yen and up per night with 2 meals
*Reservations possible from 5 persons
*Reservations must be made at least 5 days in advance.


5, FC Echigo-Tsumari Gymnastics Class

FC Echigo-Tsumari, a women’s agricultural soccer team, will perform stretches that lead to the regeneration of the body’s natural motor functions. Let’s enjoy moving your body with the players of FC Echigo-Tsumari who have learned the methods of “R-body project Inc.”
