Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2023 Winter SNOWART will finally begin on Saturday, January 14, 2023! In this issue, we will introduce various ways to enjoy Echigo-Tsumari in winter. Please take a look at them for reference.

*When coming by car, please use a 4-wheel drive vehicle for safety reasons, as snow-covered roads are very dangerous.
*Echigo-Tsumari Snow Fireworks” will not be held.
For those who are worried about driving on snow-covered roads, we recommend the official bus tour with meals and a guided tour, allowing you to fully enjoy Echigo-Tsumari in winter in a single day. Two types of tours are available: a one-day tour for snow viewing and a two day/one night tour for the New Year. The “Use it and get it! Niigata Tabiwari Campaign” is also available. Please take advantage of this opportunity.
The “Yukimi-gozen” is a special program to enjoy winter dishes, which are served in lacquerware once used for weddings and funerals in the village, and are filled with local wisdom and culture, together with the hospitality of the village. Enjoy this year’s SNOWART and the pure white satoyama scenery as you sway slowly on the bus.

Experience “Torioi” and “Dondoyaki”, two small New Year’s events to celebrate a good harvest in the Sansho district of Matsunoyama, for two days and one night. Stay at Sansho House, an Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale lodging facility renovated from an abandoned school, and enjoy life in the snow country while interacting with local residents. In addition to tasting local winter dishes, there will be plenty of recreational activities such as snowshoeing, rice cake pounding, and chinchoro making.

Akiyamago, an unexplored region with such heavy snowfall that it was once exempted from compulsory education by the national government. We have prepared a two-times-only lodging plan to experience the winter in such Akiyamago, with a special viewing of a work at the former Okasawa Branch School, the southernmost and most difficult site in Echigo-Tsumari, which became the venue for the first work in 2022. On the following day, a local guide will take you to Mikurabashi Bridge, known as the setting for the movie “Yureru. Enjoy this special time to experience the unexplored region of heavy snowfall.
