"Australia House Autumn Meeting 2023"

Summary

Autumn has arrived in the Urada area of Echigo-Tsumari, where Australia House is located. This is the time of year when the harvesting of rice and other crops is over and people are preparing for winter while enjoying the abundance of autumn harvests. For the first time in four years, the “Australia House Autumn Meeting” will be held to experience “autumn in the satoyama” and enjoy exchange with local people.

The event will include a workshop to make toothpicks and chopsticks from the twigs of the black maple trees that grow wild in the Urada area, an artist talk by 2017 Australia House Artist in Residence, woodworker Liam Mugavin, and a luncheon to enjoy new rice, followed by a landscaping talk to deepen understanding of the planting and a chance to meet the local people. After that, we will have a landscaping talk to learn about planting and prepare Australia House for winter. This will be an opportunity to wrap up this year’s activities, and we invite everyone to join us.

Lives in the Urada district of Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. He is a farmer. He is familiar with mountain animals and plants, and is experienced in gathering wild vegetables and mushrooms. He produces a variety of toothpicks using the bark of the kuromoji tree, such as “Fuji” and “Teppo. He also enjoys making kuromoji tea to enjoy its fresh aroma, and in recent years has been involved in moss bonsai and masonry art.

In the workshop, participants will make toothpicks and chopsticks utilizing the color of kuromoji bark. Kuromoji (Kuromoji) is a deciduous shrub of the camphoraceae family. The branches are used to make high-quality toothpicks, and the toothpicks themselves are also called kuromoji. The branches are sometimes used to make chopsticks, and the leaves are also used to make “kuromoji-cha” (Kuromoji tea), which is known for its antiviral properties. The leaves are also used to make Kuro-moji tea, which has a fragrance. (From Wikipedia)
