Mao Shibata, “Aoshiiru / Knowing Blue” ~Blue Shapes Born from Various Shades of Blue~

We will be holding a workshop led by Mao Shibata, an artist participating in the Special Exhibition “Waterside ENNICHI in MonET,” currently on view at the Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET.

“Aoshi-ru / Knowing Blue” is a workshop where participants can create their own unique “blue shapes” while experiencing the materials and methods the artist uses in her daily practice.The materials used include blue tarps and blue fabric—the same ones featured in the current artwork. Participants are free to create their own shapes by cutting, layering, and combining these materials. Even though they are all “blue,” the materials take on various expressions depending on the material—such as translucent blue, soft blue, stiff blue, and shades of blue that differ slightly in hue. Participants can take home their finished blue creations as stickers or magnets.

[Fee] 1,000 yen per person (Please pay in cash on-site on the day of the event)
[Eligibility] Elementary school students and up through adults (Children under 6years old must be accompanied by a guardian)
[What to Bring] If you have any “unneeded blue items” at home, please bring them along. Anything blue is welcome—clothes you no longer wear, scraps of fabric, bags, and more. The blue used in artwork, the blue that was once part of someone’s daily life. Let’s explore various shades of “blue” and create new blue forms together.

Mao Shibata, *Blue Lotus*

Mao Shibata

Born in Yokohama in 1998. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tama Art University in 2022. Completed the Master’s Program in Sculpture at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2024. The artist creates sculptures and installations exploring the theme of “forms of communication” that emerge from the increasingly diverse connections between people in contemporary society. In her recent work, she uses the physical medium of sculpture as a foundation and combines it with digital expression—a symbol of today’s information-driven society—to blur the line between reality and illusion. Through this approach, she seeks to reexamine how to express the “present” in which we live. Waterside ENNICHI in MonET

This is a hands-on exhibition that offers fun for everyone from children to adults. Visitors can admire artworks floating on the pond, and a festival is held in the community space on weekends. The corridors feature interactive installations such as a maze, while artworks that respond to sound and the breeze add color to the space. At night, the illuminated displays create a different atmosphere from that of the daytime. Additionally, workshops led by participating artists are scheduled to take place.

[September 27] Rice Harvest Event at the Ketto Stone-Walled Rice Fields

To the north of the Ketto settlement in Akiyamago, Tsunan town, lie the beautiful stone-walled terraced Rice Fields known as “Ketto no Ishigakida.” These Rice Fields have been selected as one of the “100 Best Rural Landscapes in Japan,” and as part of efforts to preserve this nationally significant landscape, a rice harvest event will be held.
