[CHINA HOUSE] Special Exhibition: “The Pond Star People in Murono”

At CHINA HOUSE, we are once again hosting a special exhibition by the artist Toy Kaishundo (Itsuki and Ken’ei), following last year’s event.

The star of the exhibition is “The Star People of the Pond,” born from a fish pond in Nanshan District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province, China. The story begins when the glimmering light on the pond’s surface was mistaken for “stars,” and as the sounds, scenery, and daily lives of the people encountered there intertwined, an imaginary world called “The Town of the Pond Stars” was born.

In this exhibition, the story of the “Pond Star People”—featuring the shimmer of the fish ponds, the daily life of the village, and memories and wishes that spread like ripples—unfolds on the second floor of Kaen.
Please come and experience the world of land, people, and imagination woven by the “Pond Star People,” who have journeyed from China to Niigata, Japan.

Organized and Sponsored by: HUBART

“The Town of Stars by the Pond” was born from our on-site experiences and imagination. It is set in a village called Huan Village (Fangzi Village), where the old and the new blend together, and revolves around the everyday events taking place there now and the traces left behind from the past: the games children play on street corners, the small talk among the women at intersections, the side dishes neighbors bring when they visit, and the leisurely time spent at the local barbershop—each of these moments feels just like when a child born in this village first plays by the fish pond and skips a stone across the water’s surface. The ripples fade one by one, and the stone inevitably sinks to the bottom. “Let’s keep the stars shining a little longer”—this is our heartfelt and sincere wish.
