“Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2022 Winter SNOWART” will be held from Saturday 29 January to Sunday 13 March 2022. The annual seasonal event includes various programs to enjoy the snow. We look forward to seeing you in Echigo-Tsumari this winter.

※ We strongly recommend you drive a 4WD car to safely navigate through snowy roads.
※ We regret to inform you that “Echigo-Tsumari Snow Fireworks” will not be held in 2022. 

1. Facilities open during winter

Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, MonET

Hokuetsu Seppu Adventure

・Duration: Sat 29 Jan – Sun 13 Mar 2022, Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
・Opening hours: 10:00 – 16:00
Night Museum (only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays): 16:30 – 20:00 (Last entry by 19:30)
・Admission: Adult JPY1200, Child age between 7 and 15 JPY600
※ The admission to the museum or the Special Ticket for Winter will give you access both during day and night. 

“Hokuetsu Seppu” was the best-selling book in the Edo Period which introduced life in a heavy snow country. Hokuetsu Seppu Adventure represents the world captured in “Hokuetsu Seppu” through artworks. Night Museum invites visitors to experience the fantastic world illuminated by artworks of light.

Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum

“The Monument of Tolerance” by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov and Snowy Wonderland
・Duration: Sat 29 Jan – Sun 6 Mar 2022, Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
・Opening hours: 10:00 – 17:00 (Last entry by 16:30)
・Admission: Adult JPY1200, Child age between 7 and 15 JPY600
※ Please note that opening dates, hours and price of tickets vary depending on the programs.

The program offers visitors an opportunity to gain a holistic experience of art, food, and agriculture of satoyama in winter. Visit the newly created artwork by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, “The Monument of Tolerance” standing in the snowy landscape or experience “snow art” to appreciate the potential of snow as a material for artworks, playing with sledge and kamakura (a hut made of snow), and tasting mochi.

Bijinbayashi Story
The exhibition highlights satoyama life and beech tree forests as fell as introduces the ecology of beech tree which is unique to a snow country.

A small special exhibition in collaboration between Tokamachi-city Museum and Kyororo

Experience Snow-Shoe
Snow-shoe is available to rent to go for a walk in Satoyama in snow.
The rental service is only available during opening hours after snowfall.
Price: Visitor with admission to the museum JPY300, Snow-shoe only JPY1000

"House of Light" by James Turrell

・Closing dates: Wednesdays and Thursdays in January and February, Wednesdays in March  ※ Temporary closure will be announced on the official website.

"Tunnel of Light" by Ma Yansong and MAD Architects (Kiyotsukyo Tunnel)

・Open throughout the year (including end of year/new year)
・Opening hours: 9:00 – 16:00 (Last entry by 15:30) in January and February, 8:30 – 17:00 (Last entry by 16:30) in March
※ The access to the Tunnel will be closed or the Tunnel will close earlier depending on the conditions of snowfall.
※ The facility at the entrance will be closed from 1 December 2021 to 31 March 2022. (The duration is subject to change depending on the snow condition.)

2. Restaurant

Echigo-Matsudai Satoyama Shokado
・Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
・Opening hours: 10:00 – 17:00 (Lunch finishes at 14:00)
Satoyama Buffet is available on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays with a seasonal special, “cheese foudu” served with Matsudai-grown vegetables, sausage and home-baked bread rolls. (From Sat 4 Dec 2021 – Sun 27 Mar 2022)

■ Salon MonET(A cafe in MonET)
・Open only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
・Opening hours: 11:00 – 16:30 (Last order by 16:00)
Menu include coffee, tea and sweets
※Salon MonET open only to Museum ticket holders.

■MonET Community Space
・Open only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between Sat 29 Jan to Sun 13 Mar 2022
Opening hours: 11:00 – 15:00
A warm soup made from local ingridients (recipe supervised by Yonezawa Fumio chef) will be available.

3. Official Guided Tour 2022 Winter

■ A day trip on a bus from and to Echigo-Yuzawa station – Yukimigozen and Echigo-Tsumari in winter
・Dates: Sat 29 Jan, Sat 5, Sat 12, Sat 19, Sat 26 Feb, Sat 5, Sat 12 Mar 2022
※ Dates may be added in due course
・Price: JPY14,800 (those who is 13-year-old or older), JPY12,800 (child age under 12-year-old)
The tour includes experiences you can only gain in winter such as “yukimigozen”, a home-cook meal filled with nutritious goodies of a snow country, artworks in snow and snowy landscape.

■ Stay ovenight: Join in Koshogatsu in Echigo-Tsumari
・Date: Sat 15 and Sun 16 Jan 2022
・Price: JPY20,000 (those who is 13-year-old or older), JPY17,000 (child age under 12-year-old), JPY7000 for toddlers and babies age under three
※ Maximum capacity 30. Booking is essential. Booking will be closed on Mon 10 Jan 2022 or when reached to the maximum capacity.

The stay overnight tour allows participants to experience and join a koshogatsu ritual, wishing for the good harvest of the year in Sansho community in Matsunoyama area including “Torioi” and “Dondoyaki”. Participants will also meet local people during their stay in Sansho House while enjoy the distinctive new year’s feast of the region, playing in the snow, pondering mochi, and making “chinkoro”. The tour starts from and ends at Echigo-Yuzawa station and we welcome you to send your child (10-year-old or older) to participate alone!

4. Move your body with FC Echigo-Tsumari

■ FC Echigo-Tsumari presents “move you body” workshop
・Date to be confirmed
The workshop gives you an opportunity to understand your own body and helps you maintain and improve the potential of your mobility through stretch and synapsology. Join players of the FC Echigi-Tsumari who have learnt the “R-body project” method which is applied to the Olympians and enjoy moving your body. Co-operation by R-body project
