The body planning unit Yohaku has been presenting performance works in freely transforming forms and media. In this exhibition, they will stage a one-day-only performance of their 《Amida Crossing》 work. Watch them move busily from near and far.
“Huh? My alter ego won’t do what I say!” Something is going on, and the workers are gathering around, looking for things and carrying them, but ……, they seem to be in real trouble.

Switch Soken, which has staged ‘3 to 30 second plays that start when a switch is pressed’ all over Japan, makes its first appearance in Echigo-Tsumari! As an event of the special exhibition “87-Day Square Adventure with Captain MonET”, a special mini-performance of “Switch” unique to Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET ! You press the switch and become an audience member or the protagonist of the story?
Selected performances from the ‘switches’ that have been researched and developed so far are arranged in a MonET version and installed here and there in the corridor. This is an experiential work in which site-specific momentary theatre unfolds simultaneously. A crazy and peaceful festive space appears around the square pond for one day only! Plans are to be made! Part-time researchers = performers are invited for this performance. We are looking for part-time researchers = performers for this performance. You want to push the switch, you want to be pushed, come and join us! To the banks of the delightful square pond!

We are Switch Research Institute, a Tokyo-based company that researches, develops and performs unusual forms of theatre, mainly on the streets of various locations. We have been invited to perform a special mini-performance of our work in “87-Day Square Adventure with Captain MonET”. Special and mini? How’s the heart of the seemingly contradictory statement? This is a mini event. At first, there was a proposal to hold a workshop. However, the exhibition organisers’ passionate wish to have many people enjoy the event, and our desire to perform in such a happy exhibition and museum, led us to invite a wide range of performers from inside and outside Niigata Prefecture to perform a work unique to the Museum on Echigo-Tsumari, MonET. The work will be performed in the museum. We would like to ask for your help in realising this work! From those who want to participate in the festival in a fun and casual way, to those who are keen on theatre and know their stuff! We are looking forward to hearing from you!
Director of Switch Research Institute, Mitsuse Yubie
Switch is a slightly different form of theatre: a short play of about 30 seconds, performed repeatedly each time the audience ‘presses’ the switch. It is significantly shorter than many other theatre productions, with fewer lines, fewer set-ups and less rehearsal time (only one workshop and one rehearsal!), so the hurdle to participation is low for those with no acting experience, and we think it will be easy for them to take part. For those who have experience in acting, it is different and more rewarding and fun than theatre, where many people see the play at once in a theatre. We have received fulfilling feedback from the actors who have participated so far every time. So we are sincerely looking forward to receiving applications from many people, regardless of their acting experience. Whether or not we can realise the performance depends on your application. We are earnestly looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much!
Oishi Masahiro, Deputy Director, Switch Research Institute
